Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I was told that the Holy Bible has more to it than what is in it (more chapters).

Answer: It would be our belief that the Protestant version of the Bible has everything in it that God intended for us. The scripture is given to us as the Word of the Living God; true, immutable, steadfast, and as unchangeable as it's Author, the Lord Jehovah. As such, it is the lighted lamp to guide the feet of a lost world from the depths of sin and sorrow to the heights of righteousness and glory. It as an unclouded mirror that reveals the face of the crucified Savior. It is a signpost that points to heaven and a danger signal that warns of Hell. It was written for our learning and admonition. It would not make sense if God gave it to us for these things for Him then to allow portions to be lost that He wanted us to have.

Some would try to portray the thought that there have been portions added. An example would be Mark 16. One man defended these scriptures by saying "a good man would not add to the Word of God and a bad man would not add that." The real problem with those that argue against this portion and others is they don't believe it, hence, a desire to remove it.

The Roman Catholic Church has several books it added to the Bible called the Apocryphal books. They have been rejected by the Protestant church on the basis that:

1.) The Jewish people did not accept them in their canon of Old Testament scriptures.

2.) Jesus did not accept these books. Neither He nor His disciples quoted them. Yet there are hundreds of quotations from the Old Testament canon of scripture.

3.) They lack evidence of inspiration. Great portions of them are legendary and fictitious. They were not written by a prophet nor do they claim divine inspiration.

There are also New Testament Apocryphal books that contain strange stories about Jesus and the Apostles. There are stories of Jesus' childhood that obviously do not line up with the Biblical Jesus. For example: Jesus in anger causing the death of some of His playmates. Jesus giving life to a dried fish and a wooden dove. These books have never been accepted by the church as authoritative.
