Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: I see the word forty mentioned in the Bible numerous times. I do know that seven means completion, but what does the number forty represent? Someone told me visitation and return, but I am confused. Can you help me?

Answer: Thank you for your question. I must admit that I have never given this one much thought until now. I'm not sure that I have a solid answer but here's what I have. Forty seems to be associated with each new development in the history of God's mighty acts, especially salvation. Examples would be the flood, redemption from Egypt, Elijah and the prophet era, the advent of Christ and the birth of the Church. Personally, I think it could be seen as a purification period or a time of Grace either by goodness or punishment.

1. The downpour of rain during the flood (Genesis 7:17)
2. The raven dispatched (Genesis 8:6)
3. Moses, Elijah, and Jesus all fasted 40 days.
4. The Children of Israel had rest 40 years, or spent 40 years in captivity. (Numbers 14:34; Judges 3:11; 13:1)
5. Jonah's message to Nineveh of destruction in 40 days (Jonah 3:4)
6. Don't forget that a generation is considered 40 years. Some generations didn't receive promises because of sin.

I don't really know if there is a definite answer as to the meaning of 40, but maybe this will help some. Thanks and may the Lord bless you.
