Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Do you believe that the King James Version Bible is the only Bible we should use? The scriptures say do not take away from or add to. This is what I have been taught and beleive. When you change the words you change the Spirit.

Answer: The question of a reliable translation is a controversal issue that is both modern and historical. The issue of a reliable translation is important. Our belief and hope rest on the truth of Scripture. If it is false, we are building on quicksand.

Many times the core issue is misunderstood and your question may reflect this. The KJV is an English translation. This means it is not the original language of the Bible and therefore not the original word of God written. The KJV was not the first English translation and it is obviously not the last. In fact the KJV used today is not an exact copy of the 1611 version. The difference being due to the changes in the English language since then.

The core issue is in the differences of the Greek and Hebrew language copies from which the KJV and other English Bibles are translated from. You will notice this in any modern English Bibles in their footnotes. There are two Greek texts existing today. The differences between the two are the reasons for the major differences in English Bibles. The Greek text which is historically and traditionaly most reliable is the one the KJV is based on.

Furthermore, a translation can only be as trustworthy as the translators that produced it. Again the KJV is reliable on this issue.

It is logical that the God who inspired the original manuscripts would also protect it for future generations. The KJV shows evidence of providential protection.

Although the KJV is not inspired, it is a faithfully rendering of the copies of the originally inspired manuscripts and is worthy of our trust. A more scholarly discussion of the issues involved and the history of the KJV translators is found in the the book - Which Version Is the Bible? and is published by Global Evangelism Ministry.
