~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Is it true that in Revelation 22:16 Jesus says "I am the morning star," and that the 'morning star' in Hebrew is Lucifer?

Answer: Briefly the answer is yes on both questions but not maybe in the way you intended your question.

It is true that Jesus does refer to himself as the "morning star" (dawn star). Also in Isaiah 14:12, there is a reference to Lucifer of which the Hebrew meaning is morning or dawn star. By looking at verse four in the same chapter, you see it is in reference to the King of Babylon who was defeated from a lofty position. The use of the word Lucifer may be more a description than a name.

There may be a secondary reference to Satan in connection with Luke 10:18 and Revelation 12:7-10. This would be descriptive of Satan in his pre-fallen state.

In Revelation 2:28, there is also a reference to the overcomers in the church of Thyatira being promised the "morning star," an obvious reference to Jesus.
