Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Can you please tell me how long Paul was in jail? Also, please provide the Bible reference.

Answer:

Paul was in jail more than one time.

Acts 16 gives an account of Paul and Silas being put in jail. They sang in spite of their suffering and God caused an earthquake of some sort to open the jail. We assume that this imprisonment was only one night, but the Bible does not specifically state the length.

Acts 24 gives another account of Paul being placed in prison. Verse 27 mentions that after two years Festus was willing to release him, but Felix wanted to please the Jews, so he was left in prison. Again, the exact length of time is not mentioned.

Acts 28 tells of Paul's imprisonment in Rome. Historians believe he was held in the Roman jail until his death.
