Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Why are some people "black" and others "white"? Does the Bible say anything about this? What is your view?

Answer: The Bible gives no explanation for the origin of various races. The Bible does give the information that the first man was Adam and his wife was Eve. These two people are the parents of all human life. Many theologians point out the fact that the name Adam means "red" and the color red contains all of the other colors. Therefore we can see that all the variations of color originated from Adam.

I do want to point out that there is no evidence that any race came to be as a result of a "mark" or "curse" that God put on someone such as Cain or Ham. This belief has been perpetuated by certain bigoted groups or individuals in order to affirm their belief that the white race was in some way superior to the other races. I believe the most accurate view is to realize that God created men, beginning with Adam, and chose to make several varieties of colors and physical features. I also want to encourage you not to become sidetracked by these types of questions, but instead to focus in on the vital issues that God directly addresses in His Word.
