Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: It is stated in Exodus 34:28 that Moses "neither ate bread nor drank water" for forty days and nights. How can this be possible, if we know that men cannot live without water for more than a few days?

Answer: The book of Exodus is full of miracles, not to mention the Bible itself. The God of nature, and the Creator and Sustainer of every part of the universe, from the atom to the galaxies, can certainly suspend or alter anything that He controls.

The incident you refer to is an example of the Bible's many miracles. Since the Bible is God's revelation to the human race, it should not be surprising that many things of a supernatural nature are recorded in its pages.

As Moses began his ministry, he saw a burning bush that was not consumed (Exodus 3:3). Later he was sent to Pharaoh to secure the release of the Israelites from bondage. During this period of time, Moses was empowered by God to send plague upon plague on rebellious Pharaoh in order to set the people free. Then the waters of the Red Sea were parted, and Israel passed over dry shod, but Pharaoh and his army were drowned as they tried to bring them back into captivity. Later, we also see another miracle in chapter 15, where the bitter waters were made sweet. In the 16th chapter, the people were supernaturally fed with manna. In the 17th chapter, they were miraculously provided with water from a rock. This goes on and on as we read the books of Moses.

If God could do all those things, why is it so difficult to believe that He could also supernaturally sustain Moses through this period of fasting, even though he also went without water at that time?

I also believe that Jonah was kept alive for three days in the whale's belly. I believe that Jesus performed those many miracles, including the feeding of five thousand men besides women and children. I believe He walked on the water, and that He opened blind eyes and deaf ears, as recorded in the Scriptures. This proves to me that God is able and willing to suspend any of the laws of nature that He has made, in order to achieve a spiritual goal.

God does not perform miracles just for display, but to accomplish something worthy of His goodness, power, love, and His other attributes.

The greatest miracle of all is in His ability to save a soul from sin and condemnation. This miracle is called "The new birth." Those who believe in Jesus know this from experience.
