Lesson 24 - The Life and Ministry of Jesus - Part IV (Text Version)

His Confrontational Preaching

Scripture References: Matthew 10:34; John 6:38; 2 Timothy 3:16.

To confront: to stand face to face, to oppose; to meet in hostility.

The Prince of Peace Does Warfare!

Jesus confronted people with their evils, their wrong ideas, wrong reasonings, and their hypocrisies. His purpose was not to get people to like him but his purpose was to do the will of Him that sent Him and that was one of the purposes for which He came.

He said, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross and followeth after me is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it" (Matthew 10:34-39).

We, as well as He, are in a warfare against "principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12). "The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of (enemy) strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having a readiness to revenge all disobedience..." (2 Corinthians 10:4-7).

We repeat again what we read, "All that it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing."

John the Baptist became a prisoner and was later executed because he confronted King Herod with the sin of having his brother's wife, "It is not lawful for you to have her." Herod's brother's wife hated John for saying that and got her revenge through her daughter to have his head cut off and put on a platter. But John did the will of God.

Parents are afraid to stand up against the evils that are ruining their children. The filth and smut of the world comes into their homes via television, the internet, and bad literature. Some of them will not do it because of the things they have allowed in their own lives; others will not because they don't want turmoil or discord. Parents will not oppose things taught and promoted in the schools their children attend, such as homosexuality, abortion, and other liberal and destructive ideas and lifestyles.

Citizens will vote for corrupt politicians who back abortion, special rights for homosexuals, such as homosexual marriages, homosexuals openly in government and the military, integration of sexes in the military and other practices that are a disgrace to our country, because they feel things are going all right economically.

People will attend and support churches with unscriptural doctrines and practices and who do not teach them how the Bible says Christians ought to live. They will not speak up or do any thing about it but will remain part of the "spiritual wickedness in high places."

Christians need to confront, not condone, sin. Falsehood should be confronted with truth.
