Lesson 14 - What About the Resurrection? (Text Version)
The Apostles' Teaching on the Resurrection (Cont'd.)
- 16. (Cont'd.) (5) But the rest of the dead lived not again until the
thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. (6) Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years."
- 17. Revelation 20:13: "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works."
Facts Concerning the Resurrection From the Dead:
- All people, good and bad, will be resurrected from the dead to stand judgment -- two different judgments (John 5:25. Revelation 20).
- There will be two resurrections from the dead, 1000 years apart (Revelation 20).
- It is the voice of the Son of God (Jesus) that will call ALL the dead to arise to come to judgment, both good and bad (John 5:21, 28-29).
- It will be by the Spirit that dwells in us that life will be given to our resurrected bodies (Romans 8:11).
- Paul said that the Lord will present him with those to whom he ministered in Corinth (2 Corinthians 4:14). This could indicate that preachers will be presented at the judgment with those to whom they have ministered. Hebrews 13:17 says that those who are over others to watch for their souls must give an account concerning them. Some will be able to give a joyful account and others will give a grievous account. The writer indicates that those of the flock can make a difference by their obedience and submission to those who are over them in the Lord. The preacher must also be answerable for how well he has served as an example and in caring for the flock of God.
- Speaking of being ready for His second coming, in Luke 12:41-48, Jesus said, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?" [This is the duty of a pastor.]
- "Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
- "Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
- "But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
- "That lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
- "And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
- "But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."
- 2 Peter 2:1 says, "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction."
- 1 John 4:1 says, "Many false prophets are gone out into the world.
- Jesus said (Matthew 7:21-23), "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
- "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
- "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
- At the resurrection or at the rapture our vile body (body of humiliation or low estate, corrupting body) will be changed and made like the Lord's glorious body (Philippians 3:10-11).
- Some will not have died when the Lord returns for his people, but right after the resurrection of the righteous, their bodies will be changed "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
"For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality" (1 Corinthians 15:51-53). See also 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18.
