Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: If God does not remember sin how come he killed David's son after David asked for forgiveness?

Answer: When God says that He does not remember a sin against us, He means that the sin is forgiven, but that does not mean that the forgiven person can escape the consequences of his sin.

David's sin had serious repercussions in Israel. First, because adultery and murder were committed. Second, because a person in position of leadership sinned, he set a bad example for others. If David could get away with sin without serious consequences to himself, then others would also be emboldened to sin the same way.

The Bible also teaches that God chastens His children at times. David's sin was put away as far as his soul's salvation was concerned, but he had to receive punishment from God as a chastening. A human father finds it necessary at times to inflict pain on his children, if they do wrong (Proverbs 19:18). If he lets the child go unpunished, that child will be encouraged to do it again. Likewise, God may chasten His child when he has sinned, but He still loves him (Hebrews 12:5-11).

The child born to David and Bathsheba is in glory, and David is now in glory with him (2 Samuel 13:23).

Sin causes sorrow and pain - even sin which God has forgiven - not only to ourselves, but to others. Therefore, we all must strive not to sin.
