Question: How did the blood of Jesus cover Old Testament saints?

Answer: Every ordinance of the Old Testament was given to bring us to Christ. "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith" (Galatians 3:24). Even the tabernacle in the wilderness showed the priestly work of Christ in types and shadows (Hebrews 9:1-28).

Before Christ, all who died in the faith looked forward to Calvary. The Old Testament declares that Abraham believed the Lord, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. It is restated in the New Testament (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3; Hebrews 11:39,40). In the offering of his only son, Isaac, Abraham revealed a faith in the Lamb of God that was to take away the sin of the world (Genesis chapter 22). In verse 8, he declares that God will provide himself a lamb, and afterward in verse 14 called the name of that place "Jehovah Jireh (which means, the Lord will provide) as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen." Hebrews 11:19 makes it clear that Abraham by faith foresaw the death and resurrection of Christ in his offering up of Isaac. Jesus affirmed in John 8:38 that Abraham, by faith, saw His day.

Romans 10:4-10 makes it clear that Moses described the righteousness that is of the law and that it is imputed by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the faith that God has raised him from the dead. By this we are saved. Also, Hebrews 9:11-15 says that the ordinances and sacrifices that sanctified the flesh in the Old Testament are, indeed, redeemed by the blood of Christ in the New Testament (verse 15).

To better understand why the animals were sacrificed under the law, I suggest a thorough study of the book of Hebrews, chapters 5 through 10. 1 believe this will open your understanding regarding the correlation of old and new covenants of Scripture.
