Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: What is the age of accountability?

Answer:

I assume you mean when a person is old enough to realize they need to be saved. There is really no set age, it just depends on the person and how they have been raised. God spoke to Samuel when he was a child and he recognized it was the Lord.

Nowadays it is not uncommon to find children who are oppressed or possessed by evil spirits. When parents live ungodly lives and cuss and smoke and have a hateful attitude, it isn't any wonder their kids act like natural brute beasts and kill and shoot in a school, or listen to acid rock music or rap music that contains vulgar language. Satan knows that if he can get the youth, he can destroy that nation, because they are the future leaders.

If you tell a child no, he generally knows what you mean, but that does not necessarily mean he understands the way of salvation. Paul said that if the parents are holy, their children are holy also. (1 Corinthians. 7:14) If mom and dad are saved, their children have a spiritual covering, but they still need to confess and accept Christ. There was a boy that was possessed and he would be cast into the water and fire and Jesus healed him. (Matthew 17:14-19)

You can tell a child to kneel down and pray and he will do it because he sees YOU do it, but if he does not even know how to read yet he is not going to understand deep spiritual things unless God does something. I know a lot of Christians who claim to have been saved for years, but they don't really pray and seek God and don't seem to understand a lot of spiritual things either. There is too much carnality in the church today. If your kids are not oppressed and have not started school yet, just put them in Gods hands and make sure you keep them in church and away from ALL evil influences.

I remember watching my Mom pray when I was in the third grade. I did not fully understand what she was doing, but I did not disturb her. I knew however she was praying to the Lord. That stuck with me a long time . Thank God for Godly parents.
