Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: Why do you use instrumental music during worship service?

Answer: Because the Bible instructs us to praise God in His sanctuary, Praise Him in the firmament of His power, Praise Him for His mighty acts, etc..... and then the list of musical instruments that follow includes trumpet, psaltery, harp, timbrel, stringed instruments, organs, cymbals, both loud and high sounding! Ps. 150 When David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing...with tabrets of joy, and with instruments of music! I Sam 18:6 See also 2 Sam. 6:5, I Chron 16:42

The argument is often put forth that since there are no instruments mentioned in the New Testament we should therefore not use them in worship...But, The Bible plainly speaks of harps and musicians in heaven! Don't you think that anything that is good enough for His heaven is good enough for His house here? Please read: Rev. 5:8, Rev. 14:2, and Rev. 15:2 In the Lord's prayer (Mt.6:10), Christ prayed, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

Dear brothers and sisters:

I chanced on to your site and really enjoyed it. I appreciate David Wilkerson so much.

On your site "Ask a Minister," the question was asked, "Why do you use instruments during worship?" Your answer was great. However, there is a very strong New Testament foundation for the use of instruments. It is so basic that I am amazed that it is missed so often.

The word "psalms is used five times in the N.T.: Rom 15:9; 1Cor 14:15; Eph 5:19; Col 3:16; Jam 5:13.

The word in the greek "psallo". A cursory look at the word, just from Strong's Concordance alone, shows the following definition (in part):

    1. To pluck off, pull out.
    2. to cause to vibrate by touching-to twang.
2a. To touch or strike the chord, to twang strings of a musical instrument so
                that they gently vibrate.
2b. To play on a stringed instrument.
    3. To sing praises in worship to God.

There is more, but that, I believe, takes care of the matter. My guitar or the piano falls specifically within the parameters of the word's definition and I believe that it would be safe to conclude that musical instruments in general find no prohibition in N. T. Scripture. In fact, the opposite is true. Their use is encouraged and commanded.

Everytime I play an instrument in worship to God, I am only being obedient to His Word. God prohibits nothing but sin as is amply and clearly defined in His Word. I love to worship and praise Him with music and my instruments. I believe He accepts that worship and blesses it. Why? Because He says so IN THE N.T. AS WELL AS THE O.T.

Thanks for letting me share. God bless all of you.

Your servant:

John M. Contreras
