Ask a Minister

~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: My husband has recently found a friend at work that is an apostolic. He has persuaded my husband into believing that this is the way. We were both raised Pentecostal and I never thought I would be in the position that I am in right now. I am so upset and frustrated. I cry all of the time. My husband begged me to go to this apostolic church with him. So I went with him. Keep in mind that this is the first time that he had been there also. He was so impressed, and said that he felt something that he had never felt before, that they baptized him right then in the name of Jesus. I have always been taught that you baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and so as he. He knows nothing about them at all, and he was drawn in. They also believe that to be saved you have to ask for forgiveness, be baptized in Jesus' name only, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. This is not right! I am at a loss of what I am to do. I do not believe this way, and I don't want our family to be split over this. We are trying to have a child, and I don't want to have to go to separate churches and confuse a child any more than they already are. But I also don't think that I should give in and change what I believe and know is right. I cry every time I think about it. I keep praying that God will open his eyes to the truth, but when you have somebody at work that you talk to all day that keeps pushing and pushing, I don't know if I have a chance. Do you have any suggestions or advice? Please.

Answer: I believe you when you say that you are terribly upset due to your husbands involvement with the Apostolic church. I believe their doctrine to be false as well.

A great book I suggest that you read to give you more insight on their doctrine is, "God in Three Persons," by Carl Brumback. It is printed by Pathway Press of Cleveland, Tennessee.

You are doing the right thing by committing the situation to the Lord in prayer. You may not think that it's helping; but be assured, it is! God works through prayer. God is able through your prayers to open up his eyes to the truth.

I had a friend in Bible College that got involved in this church for a season; but thank God he has been 'delivered'! I believe someone was praying.

By all means continue to be a Proverbs 31 wife and don't preach at him (1 Peter 3:1-4). Seek the counsel of your local, Pentecostal Trinitarian pastor.

May the Lord give you His strength and wisdom (Isa 43:1-2).
