Lesson 11 - What About Angels? Cont'd.(Text Version)

Who Are the Angels? (Cont'd.)

Michael:

  1. Is called the Archangel in Jude 9, who contended with the devil about the body of Moses.
  2. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 tells us that Christ will descend with a shout, with the voice of the archangel.
  3. In Daniel 12:1, Michael is called the great prince which stands for the children of Israel.
  4. In Daniel 10:13, Michael is called one of the chief princes.
  5. In verse 21, Michael is called your (Daniel) prince.
  6. In Revelation 12:7, it is Michael who will lead the angels of God against the devil and his angels and casts out the devil and his angels into the earth from the heavenlies.
  7. No other angel is specifically called an archangel.

Gabriel:

  1. Literally means in Hebrew, man of God.
  2. In Daniel 8:16-17, Gabriel was sent to make Daniel understand a vision concerning future world empires.
  3. In Daniel 9:21, Gabriel is called "the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. " He explained the "seventy weeks" determined on Israel to bring in everlasting righteousness.
  4. 500 years later in Luke 1:19, Gabriel was sent to Zacharias, the father-to-be of John the Baptist. He said, "I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee glad tidings."
  5. In Luke 1:26 we read, "And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary."

In Scripture, we are not told anything more about Gabriel. It does not say that he has a silver trumpet and will blow it like the song says.

Lucifer:

  1. Isaiah 14:12: "How art thou fallen from heaven, 0 Lucifer, son of the morning!"
  2. Ezekiel 28:12-17: "Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God, every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold.- the workmanship of thy tabrets and thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created Thou art the anointed cherub, that covereth, and I have set thee so; thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God; and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground; I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee...."

The Angel of the Lord:

The expression, The Angel of the Lord, is used many times in Scripture. It might not always refer to the same angel. It might just refer to the particular angel sent to the individual. There are other times that it seems that the "Angel of the Lord" could be appearances of the Lord, himself, in that appearance and as "My Presence" that "shall go with thee."

Other than those mentioned above, no other angel seems to be mentioned by name in Scripture.

"Please tell me more."
