I. Salvation

Salvation is:

  1. A definite experience — it takes place in a person's life at a definite time and place, as does the experience of marriage.
  2. The experience of being "saved" from sin's penalty and power in one's life.

Saved is a Bible term for salvation from sin (Romans 10:13; Mark 16:16; Ephesians 2:8; 1 Corinthians 1:21, 18).

Saved is a good term to use for salvation, even with those who do not understand it. However, we should always make sure it is already understood or that we explain what we mean by the term.

Illustration: After having asked whether a person has been saved, the person proceeded to describe a particular illness or an accident from which he was "saved." Therefore, we should make sure that the person understands that we mean salvation from (1) sin's penalty and (2) power, thus transforming our life.

To the saved person, salvation has a past, present, and future aspect.

  1. I have already been saved from sin — I have received forgiveness for sin and new life in Christ.
  2. I am presently being saved — kept, sanctified, preserved from this present evil world.
  3. I will be "saved from wrath" to come (Romans 5:9) and from the presence of sin, at the coming of Christ for his saints (1 Thessalonians 4:15-18).

Salvation is also a general term, used in the Bible, to indicate preservation from trouble or danger as well as deliverance from sin and its consequences.

Other Biblical and Theological Words

An understanding of these will better help us understand what is involved in our salvation from sin; some of these are listed as the subjects for this seminar. A study of other terms also would give us further insight:

Redemption, Atonement, Propitiation, Reconciliation, Restitution, Mediator, Vicarious, Grace, Adoption

Redemption: to buy back (1 Peter 1:18)

Our maker bought us back after we had sold ourselves to be the servants of Satan and sin.

Illustration — A boy had made a small toy boat. Someone stole the boat and sold it to a pawn shop proprietor. One day the boy, the maker of the boat, happened into the shop and saw his boat for sale. He told the man that the boat belongs to him but the proprietor refused to surrender the boat to the boy without collecting the price he was asking. The boy wanted the boat so much that he paid the price.

In leaving with the boat, he drew the boat close to him and was heard saying to the little boat, "Little boat, you are twice mine—I made you and I bought you."

Atonement: from an Anglo-Saxon term meaning "at 'one' ment"

The process of dealing with the problem caused by man's sin to bring him into a right relationship with God.

Illustration: 2 Samuel 21:1-9. Read Leviticus 17: Blood shed is a symbol of life taken or given. Death is God's penalty for sin. Christ's blood or death is accepted by God as our blood or death when we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
