Lesson 24 - The Life and Ministry of Jesus - Part IV (Cont'd.)(Text Version)

Confronted by Jesus

  1. Jesus confronted the devil with the Scriptures, during his temptation in the wilderness, just before He began His ministry.
  2. Jesus confronted the shallow beliefs and convictions of people in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7.
  3. Jesus confronted any misconceptions of the people regarding the greatness of John the Baptist (Matthew 11:7-15).
  4. Jesus confronted the apathy, the unresponsiveness of the people of his generation (Matthew 11:16-17.
  5. He confronted the lack of response of the cities where He did so many miracles: Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum (Matthew 11:2024).
  6. He confronted those who accused him of casting out devils by the prince of devils. He said:

"O ye generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned" (Matthew 12:34-37).
  7. He reproved them for hypocritically seeking signs. "A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed" (Matthew 16:4). See also Matthew 12:38.
  8. He called them blind and deaf, like Isaiah said of the people (Matthew 13:14-15); And blind leaders of the blind (Matthew 15:14).
  9. He confronted them:

"Why do ye transgress the commandment of God by your traditions? For God commanded, saying Honor thy father and mother: and He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profiled by me; And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your traditions. "Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips,; but their heart is far from me" (Matthew 15:3-8).
  10. He confronted them for worshipping God in vain, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:9).
  11. He confronted them for teaching that to eat without washing your hands was a defilement or a sin but did not consider the inside of the "cup" (their own hearts) that was so dirty (Matthew 12:34; 17-20).
  12. He confronted them for making His Father's House a den of thieves instead of a House of Prayer (Matthew 21:12-13). Some "churches" - bingo, card parties, dances, carnivals!!
  13. He confronted their self-righteous hypocrisy, told them a story about a father and his two sons to illustrate his point and said, "The publicans and harlots go into the kingdom of God before you" (Matthew 21:28-31).
  14. He confronted them about killing the prophets, stoning those God sent to them, and conspiring to kill the Son (Matthew 21:33-46).
  15. He confronted the scribes and Pharisees regarding their hypocrisy on many lines (Matthew 23, whole chapter).
  16. There is recorded in John 5 quite a confrontation with the Jews after they accused him of breaking the sabbath by healing a man who had an infirmity thirty eight years.
